The Hardy Boys are famous mystery solving amateur detectives whose first appearance was back in 1927. The characters began in story books which have since been revised to, among other things, remove racist stereotypes. In 1969, The Hardy Boys cartoon debuted on television,
about the same time as Scooby Doo. In this incarnation, The Hardy Boys were a traveling rock band that traveled the country and solved mysteries. Sound familiar?
Valerie Smith from Josie and the Pussycats debuted. He was smart, talented, and a positive role model overall.
Outside of the Hardy Boys themselves, every other member of the cast seemed to be a token of sorts. There was the token girl, the token fat kid, and of course the token Black guy. I barely remember this show. It was probably in syndication when I did catch it. Regardless, it was good to see a character of color in my Saturday morning cartoon soup. Here's a clip from the show:
